HOLISTIC NUTRITION

In today’s world, we are constantly exposed to toxins. Good health is necessary to deal with the many environmental stressors we face on a daily basis. In addition to the pollution, we also lead busy stressful lives, and do not take the time to consume nutrient rich foods, but instead we have fast foods regularly. Good health is achieved through a wholesome diet, a healthy environment, and a supportive lifestyle.

Nutrition is an important aspect in attaining optimal health and wellbeing. Nutritional information provides clients with education and knowledge on how to take control of their own health through diet and lifestyle adjustments. Proper nutrition can improve many health disorders. Healthy foods provide the body with the building blocks required to heal itself. Everyone is biologically unique, and therefore no one diet is appropriate for everyone.

A Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner (ROHP) acknowledges that everyone is different, and so assesses the unique needs for each person supplying them with detailed dietary, supplements, and lifestyle protocols to improve their health and wellbeing. An ROHP focuses on foods that are natural and unrefined to ensure that the vitamins, minerals, and enzymes are intact.

Steps for achieving optimum health:

  • Wholesome diet

  • Exercise

  • Supplementation

  • Adequate rest and relaxation

  • Detoxification

  • Stress management

  • Positive mental attitude

The Healing Nature of Light

First developed over 30 years ago, phototherapy uses a specific type of light to penetrate the skin's surface and underlying tissues to stimulate the body's natural repair processes. The result is faster healing and reduced pain, swelling and inflammation.

The MedX Laser is able to help improve quality of life for those who experience pain, sports injuries and rehabilitative conditions. Laser therapy offers natural, effective, non-invasive, drug-free phototherapy solutions that are FDA cleared and Health
Canada licensed. Applying light produced by low level laser and super luminous diodes, triggers normal cellular functions that lead to faster wound healing, pain relief and accelerated functional recovery.

MedX Phototherapy has been used successfully to treat athletic injuries, acute & chronic conditions, repetitive strain disorders, tissue healing and much more. By providing the extra energy required for healing, the tissue is able to heal itself naturally. This innovative therapeutic alternative may also eliminate the need for painful, debilitating surgeries and drug therapies so often accompanied by harmful side effects.

We understood more about the nature of light and its positive effects on the body, new techniques and devices have been developed to use light as part of the healing process. This is referred to as low level laser therapy or phototherapy. Phototherapy is an umbrella term that can include light from low level lasers as well as super luminous diodes, also known as light emitting diodes (LEDS). Low level lasers, also known as cold laser light is compressed light, it is different from natural light in that it is one precise colour. Lasers are coherent waves, synchronized, and monochromatic (a single wavelength). Therapeutic light energy can be produced by Low Level Laser Diodes (LLLD) and/or Super luminous Diodes (SLD). These diodes can be within the visible red to the near infrared and infrared electromagnetic spectrum.

These properties allow laser light to penetrate the surface of the skin with no heating effect, no damage to the skin and no known side effects. Specific wavelengths and power levels result in different levels of penetration and cellular effects.

What is low level laser therapy? There are two types of medical lasers: high power and low power. High power lasers are used to cut through tissue. Low-level lasers, on the other hand, are used to stimulate tissue repair through a process of bio-stimulation. The word "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The theory was first described by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) who paved the way for the development of the therapeutic laser. The first low level therapeutic laser was developed in 1962. By the end of the 1960's, Endre Mester in Hungary was reporting an improved healing of wounds through low level laser radiation. Since then, scientists and doctors around the world have been using laser light to treat conditions which can affect all age groups.

Low level laser therapy is the application of red and near infrared light over injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. Low level therapy uses cold (sub-thermal) laser light energy to direct bio-stimulative light energy to the body's cells without injuring or damaging them in any way. The therapy is precise and accurate, offering safe and effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions. The energy range of low level laser light lies between 1 and 500 mW (milliwatts), while the energy range for surgical lasers lies between 3,000 and 10,000 mW.

Exploring the Healing Effects of MedX Phototherapy

When cells are exposed to photon energy, cellular charges are induced to change the cell homeostasis. This entails a cascade of reactions influencing a number of components of the respiratory chain. (i.e. cytochromes and cytochrome oxidase) which are the primary photo acceptors or chromophores, resulting in absorption of therapeutic wavelengths. This causes short term activation of the respiratory chain, leading to changes in redox status and in turn the activation of enhanced synthesis of ATP. The photons also affect hydrogen ion levels in the cell, in combination with increased ATP, affects the cell permeability and flow of sodium, potassium, and calcium. These changes are necessary to control the proliferative activity of the cell.

Some of the unique healing effects of MedX Phototherapy include:

·      Increased cell metabolism

·      Improved localized blood circulation

·      Development of collagen and muscle tissue

·      Relief from acute and chronic pain

·      Reduced localized inflammation and edema

·      Stimulation for wound healing and tissue repair

·      Stimulation of the immune system

·      Stimulation of nerve function

Conditions That Can Benefit from MedX Phototherapy Treatment

Research demonstrates that phototherapy can be used to effectively treat many conditions. Simulating the body’s natural repair processes using the healing nature of light has been proven particularly effective for certain conditions including:

·      Arthritis/rheumatism

·      Tendonitis, tennis and golfer's elbow

·      Repetitive Stress Injuries (i.e. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome)

·      Neck and Lower back pain

·      Soft Tissue Injuries, Strains and Sprains

·       Migraine headaches

How does MedX Phototherapy work?

What is low level laser therapy?

What exactly is phototherapy?

Does phototherapy affect only the area being treated?

How are phototherapy treatments administered?

Is MedX Phototherapy the only treatment required for healing?

How does MedX Phototherapy work? When the photons of light penetrate the skin and underlying tissue, they are absorbed by the cell, and converted into energy, thereby the cell membrane permeability is altered, and this triggers a cascade of cellular events including:

·      Stimulation of ATP

·      Stimulation of respiratory chain

·      Increased DNA and RNA synthesis

·      Increased levels of beta endorphins and serotonin

·      Enhanced collagen synthesis

Is MedX Phototherapy the only treatment required for healing? Photo/laser therapy can be used as a single therapy or adjunctive therapy in combination with other manual therapies or electro modalities such as acupuncture, ultrasound and massage therapy.

How are phototherapy treatments administered? MedX Laser/Phototherapy devices are positioned directly on the skin with gentle pressure applied. Generally there is no discomfort or sensation associated with treatment. Various areas may be treated including:

·      Directly over the lesion or site of injury

·      Muscle insertion

·      Relevant trigger points or tender points

·      Nerve roots or superficial nerve trucks

·      Acupuncture points

Does phototherapy affect only the area being treated? The affects of MedX Phototherapy treatment can be:

Local: with a direct benefit over the affected injury.
Regional: with positive effects seen in the surrounding tissue.
Systemic: broader effects evident through increased cell membrane permeability and chemical mediators carried in the blood, lymphatic and nervous systems.

Chiropractic Wellness and Rehabilitation's GaitScan

Our GaitScan™ System is a revolutionary diagnostic tool for assessing our patient's biomechanics. GaitScan has an industry high 4096 sensors and scans at an industry high 300Hz (scans per second).  These measurements provide us with a sophisticated explanation of your foot mechanics and assists us with orthotic and/or shoe solutions.

Foot Facts

People punish their feet daily by wearing ill fitting shoes or by walking around on feet that do not function properly. Educate yourself and start improving the health of your feet.

Foot Fact Number 1

25 % of the Bones in the Body are in your Feet

Your feet are a complex system of 52 bones, 66 joints, 214 ligaments, 38 muscles and tendons. It is no wonder that 75% of North Americans will experience foot health problems of varying degrees, at some point in their lives.

You could be walking in comfort with professionally fitted custom orthotics.

Foot Fact Number 2

The average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps per day

Your feet have an important job; they carry you throughout the day, with every step making an impact on your body. If your foot functions improperly it will have an effect on joints higher up the kinetic chain (your ankle, knee, hip and spine). This may result in pain or discomfort. Most individuals will seek out medical attention for the symptoms they are experiencing in their joints, but do not realize the source of their pain is their feet.

Foot Fact Number 3

60-70% of People with Diabetes have Mild to Severe Forms of Nerve Damage, Often Impairing the Sensation of the Feet

Foot disease is one of the complications of diabetes. Severe nerve damage in the feet can lead to ulceration and often lower extremity amputations. Early prevention and treatment of foot disease can be managed by effective foot care practices. These practices include: diagnosis of high pressure areas on the diabetic foot and treatment with properly fitted orthotics or footwear. Lack of proper care, ill-fitting shoes and general foot neglect are responsible for the majority of foot problems.

It's important to understand your feet have direct impact on the rest of your body and support you with each step.  A small abnormality in foot function can have a large impact on joints higher up in the body, causing pain and discomfort.

When you are running, the pressure on your feet can be three or four times your body weight. Even walking can produce more pressure than the sum of your body weight. The American Podiatric Medical Association says that the average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. That adds up to about 115,000 miles in a lifetime or more than four times the circumference of the globe. That is a lot of walking with ill-fitting shoes or painful feet!!

In some cases foot ailments can be an early signal of more serious medical problems like arthritis or diabetes.

Women have four times as many foot problems as men because they have a long history of wearing high heels and/or pointy toe shoes.

Orthotics and proper shoe fit are very important aspects of foot health.

Remember if you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your ankles, knees, hip joints or your back ....the direct cause may be the function of your feet or ill-fitting shoes.

Chiropractic Wellness and Rehabilitation is focused on providing a superior orthotic to maximize your health gains. This attention to detail has resulted in patient referrals from the Oshawa, Whitby, Courtice, Brooklin, Port Perry, Ajax, Pickering and Bowmanville areas.
