Laser therapy for Smoking Cessation PDF Print E-mail

What is Laser Therapy and how will it help me quit smoking?

Low Level Laser Therapy works in the same theory as acupuncture, using a cold laser to stimulate the acu-points associated with addiction, instead of needles. This works with the meridians in the body bringing balance to organs that may not be functioning at optimal levels. The Low Level Laser helps to produce an endorphin release working with the natural opiods in your system; giving you a feeling of well-being. This is very similar to the feeling that a smoker may get from smoking a cigarette. This endorphin release can last for up to several days. The laser helps speed up your metabolism by working at the same wavelength as the mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of each cell, converting energy into its usable form and allowing the maintenance of normal body function and metabolism.

Low Level Laser Therapy is widely used in Europe, Canada and the United States. With no negative side effects reported in its over 30 years of use. These lasers are being used for wound healing, addictions, pain, skin conditions and much more. The procedure itself will take approximately 30 minutes but with counseling/discussion you might expect the session to last about 1 hour. You will leave feeling very well relaxed, and euphoric. Most people say they have a great nights sleep.

In most cases people will experience relief with only one treatment and others may need additional treatments depending on their own level of addiction and commitment.

This has excellent success showing a 40 — 50% success rate when applied appropriately.

In a lot of cases the success rates for smoking cessation are more along the lines of 80 —90 %. Again, stressing the importance of following the post-treatment protocol.

Low power laser and Electro-stimulation of certain acupuncture points stimulate the central nervous system causing it to release endorphins, which allows your body to stop using nicotine without having physical withdrawals.

The effects will begin immediately and will reach a peak within the next couple of days, level off and begin to decrease slowly over the next four to six weeks.

Stimulation of external points in the ear is referred to as Laser Auriculotherapy. Other parts of the body are stimulated using meridian points to aid in many health conditions, especially pain, stress and addictions.

Recent neurological observation has shown that the ear can be viewed as the door into the endocrine and autonomic nervous system. Laser Therapy combined with Auriculotherapy are found effective for creating relaxation of many physiological systems, which can reduce cravings, pain, muscle spasms, and stress.

Latest findings

The major findings of the Surgeon General's 2004 report are:

1. Smoking harms nearly every organ of your body, causing many diseases and reducing your health in general.

2. Quitting smoking has immediate as well as long – term benefits, reducing risks for diseases caused by smoking and improving your overall health.

3. Smoking cigarettes with lower tar and nicotine provides no clear benefits to health.

4. The list of the diseases caused by smoking has been expanded to include abdominal aortic aneurysm, acute myeloid leukemia, cataracts, cervical cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, pneumonia, periodontitis, and stomach cancer.

General health effects of smoking

1. Smoking harms your body in many different ways. It damages the immune system and increases the risk of infections. Smokers tend to be less healthy than non-smokers.

2. Many illnesses in smokers last longer than in non-smokers, smokers are more likely to be absent from work because of illnesses, and are more likely to require longer hospitalizations than non-smokers.

3. Smokers have a greater risk of complications and have a lower survival rate after surgery because of damage to the body's defenses.

4. Smokers are at increased risk of infections, pneumonia, and other respiratory complications.

5. As you age, your bones become less dense, leading to a greater risk of hip fracture. The bone density of smokers tends to be lower than that of a non-smokers.

6. Smoking causes peripheral artery disease that can affect the blood flow throughout the entire body. In peripheral artery disease, the arteries that supply blood to the legs are narrowed by arteriosclerosis.

7. Although arteriosclerosis is more commonly thought of as a heart disease, it can affect arteries anywhere in the body, including those in the legs and brain. Healthy arteries are strong, flexible and elastic, and inner walls are smooth, allowing blood to flow freely through them to nourish tissues and organs. In 1964, the first surgeon general's report on smoking and health concluded that smoking causes lung cancer. In later years, the list of diseases linked to smoking has grown.

10 Reasons to quit smoking
Why should you stop smoking?

Facial wrinkles

Smoking causes vasoconstriction of facial capillaries, which reduces the flow of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells. This can lead to premature wrinkling that is largely irreversible.

Impotence

Smoking reduces peripheral vascular flow. In other words, the blood flow necessary to attain an erection may become blocked.

Stained teeth, bad breath

Particles from cigarette smoke stain teeth brown and yellow, and cause odour-producing bacteria that become trapped in your mouth. Gum disease and tooth loss are also common in smokers. Vocal-cord growths and cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus can commonly occur from smoking.

You smell

Cigarette smoke has an unpleasant odour that lingers on everything from your skin and your hair to clothing and curtains. Ask a non – smoking friend for an honest answer about the way you, your car and your home smell. The ugly answer: they all smell terrible.

Brittle bones

Risk factors for the crippling condition of osteoporosis are well – known these days: female, white or asian, inactive, post-menopause, small frame, calcium deficiency and genetic predisposition all contribute to low bone – mineral density. So does smoking. Numerous studies link smoking and osteoporosis in women and men. It may be because smoking affects the synthesis of estrogen and other hormones necessary for healthy bones.
A 1997 study that looked at 4,000 hip fractures in elderly women concluded that one out of every eight fractures were due to smoking – related bone loss. Once lost, bone density cannot be fully recovered.

Depression

The connection between smoking and depression has been well established. Consider the amount of nutrients that are depleted with smoking.

Poor role model

Children emulate adults. Every time you smoke a cigarette, you tell children around you that smoking is okay. Every day, an estimated 3,000 children in the united states become addicted to cigarette smoking. If they keep smoking, 1,000 of them will eventually die from conditions connected to their addiction.

Fire!

Fire caused by lightened tobacco products are the leading cause of fire. During the 1980's, smoking materials started more than 200,000 fires every year and killed more than 1,000 people, while injuring 3,000 more and causing more than $300 million in property damage. If death by fire does not impress you, surely you can recall at least one time your cigarette burned a hole in your precious silk suit or cashmere sweater.

Poor circulation drooling, paralysis, loss of speech

There's nothing good about becoming the victim of a stroke.
Hemoglobin cells are designed to carry oxygen throughout the body. In smokers, oxygen molecules are displaced by components of cigarette smoke, blocking the transfer of life -
giving oxygen. If you've convinced yourself that a stroke is an extreme or unlikely consequence of your habit, there's always premature coronary heart disease to slow you down. If you're
lucky, perhaps you'll only experience some of the inconveniences of poor circulation, like painful pins and needles or cold hands and feet.

How other people view you

No matter how a smoker justifies his or her addiction this is the simple, indisputable truth: just like the slogan says, smoking kills. Makes the habit look kind of silly overall, doesn't it?

The Healing Nature of Light

First developed over 30 years ago, phototherapy uses a specific type of light to penetrate the skin's surface and underlying tissues to stimulate the body's natural repair processes. The result is faster healing and reduced pain, swelling and inflammation.

The MedX Laser is able to help improve quality of life for those who experience pain, sports injuries and rehabilitative conditions. Laser therapy offers natural, effective, non-invasive, drug-free phototherapy solutions that are FDA cleared and Health
Canada licensed. Applying light produced by low level laser and super luminous diodes, triggers normal cellular functions that lead to faster wound healing, pain relief and accelerated functional recovery.

MedX Phototherapy has been used successfully to treat athletic injuries, acute & chronic conditions, repetitive strain disorders, tissue healing and much more. By providing the extra energy required for healing, the tissue is able to heal itself naturally. This innovative therapeutic alternative may also eliminate the need for painful, debilitating surgeries and drug therapies so often accompanied by harmful side effects.

We understood more about the nature of light and its positive effects on the body, new techniques and devices have been developed to use light as part of the healing process. This is referred to as low level laser therapy or phototherapy. Phototherapy is an umbrella term that can include light from low level lasers as well as super luminous diodes, also known as light emitting diodes (LEDS). Low level lasers, also known as cold laser light is compressed light, it is different from natural light in that it is one precise colour. Lasers are coherent waves, synchronized, and monochromatic (a single wavelength). Therapeutic light energy can be produced by Low Level Laser Diodes (LLLD) and/or Super luminous Diodes (SLD). These diodes can be within the visible red to the near infrared and infrared electromagnetic spectrum.

These properties allow laser light to penetrate the surface of the skin with no heating effect, no damage to the skin and no known side effects. Specific wavelengths and power levels result in different levels of penetration and cellular effects.

What is low level laser therapy? There are two types of medical lasers: high power and low power. High power lasers are used to cut through tissue. Low-level lasers, on the other hand, are used to stimulate tissue repair through a process of bio-stimulation. The word "laser" is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The theory was first described by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) who paved the way for the development of the therapeutic laser. The first low level therapeutic laser was developed in 1962. By the end of the 1960's, Endre Mester in Hungary was reporting an improved healing of wounds through low level laser radiation. Since then, scientists and doctors around the world have been using laser light to treat conditions which can affect all age groups.

Low level laser therapy is the application of red and near infrared light over injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. Low level therapy uses cold (sub-thermal) laser light energy to direct bio-stimulative light energy to the body's cells without injuring or damaging them in any way. The therapy is precise and accurate, offering safe and effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions. The energy range of low level laser light lies between 1 and 500 mW (milliwatts), while the energy range for surgical lasers lies between 3,000 and 10,000 mW.

Exploring the Healing Effects of MedX Phototherapy

When cells are exposed to photon energy, cellular charges are induced to change the cell homeostasis. This entails a cascade of reactions influencing a number of components of the respiratory chain. (i.e. cytochromes and cytochrome oxidase) which are the primary photo acceptors or chromophores, resulting in absorption of therapeutic wavelengths. This causes short term activation of the respiratory chain, leading to changes in redox status and in turn the activation of enhanced synthesis of ATP. The photons also affect hydrogen ion levels in the cell, in combination with increased ATP, affects the cell permeability and flow of sodium, potassium, and calcium. These changes are necessary to control the proliferative activity of the cell.

Some of the unique healing effects of MedX Phototherapy include:

·      Increased cell metabolism

·      Improved localized blood circulation

·      Development of collagen and muscle tissue

·      Relief from acute and chronic pain

·      Reduced localized inflammation and edema

·      Stimulation for wound healing and tissue repair

·      Stimulation of the immune system

·      Stimulation of nerve function

Conditions That Can Benefit from MedX Phototherapy Treatment

Research demonstrates that phototherapy can be used to effectively treat many conditions. Simulating the body’s natural repair processes using the healing nature of light has been proven particularly effective for certain conditions including:

·      Arthritis/rheumatism

·      Tendonitis, tennis and golfer's elbow

·      Repetitive Stress Injuries (i.e. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome)

·      Neck and Lower back pain

·      Soft Tissue Injuries, Strains and Sprains

·       Migraine headaches
